We Are All Made In God's Image

new year Jan 30, 2023

We are all made in the image of God. God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them male and female he created them (Genesis 1:27).

Recently, a student shared this documentary with me. I was shocked! In fact, I honestly could not believe that I had never seen this film before. It is called A Class Divided and it is the story of a teacher in Iowa. She had been teaching her class about discrimination when Martin Luther King, Jr. was killed in 1968. In response, she devised an experiment that would help her explain to her 3rd grade class why a hero they had just learned about was now dead.

The documentary is quite hard to watch. I cried as I saw how the teacher separated her classroom by their eye color and then talked about brown eyes or blue eyes in such a way that the children began to treat each other differently. The hard truth of watching this video was to consider if I had ever treated someone differently because of how they looked. If I ever did, I don’t believe it was intentional. However, the students in this video show that they were not deliberately treating their friends badly, but it happened because of the environment they were in. I wonder if we can pause for a moment and reflect on how we treat other people. Not just those with different skin colors, but those with different intellect, different genders, different everything.

Each and every single human being was made in God’s image. Why then, do we look at any other human being and think we are better than they are? Why would we consider treating another human being with disrespect or harshness?

Ephesians 2:10 says that we are all God’s masterpiece. I believe that each and every human being was created by God, for a purpose (Jeremiah 29:11), and we are all His masterpiece. Each and every human being is worthy of respect and human dignity.

I challenge our readers today, to consider our interactions with others. Are we respecting them for the sake of human dignity? Are we treating them with kindness? Are we embracing differences and celebrating life?

Instead of just tolerating differences, I hope we can truly celebrate life and embrace the way God made each person for a reason.

Without you in the world, the world would be different. Your life matters. You are made in God’s image, for a purpose, and you are His masterpiece. Please take a moment to let that sink in. You are not here by accident. You are here for a reason. God loves you!
