Faithfulness in Time of Revival

faithfulness Feb 20, 2023

God is faithful. He loves us unconditionally and has not forgotten about us. He sees us – you and me. He knows what is going on in our lives and in the world around us. He cares about us.

Have you seen the revival taking place at Asbury University?

It started on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, and is still going strong. Pendleton (2023) wrote that it is “a movement that only God could orchestrate and keep going.” Devore and Bryson (2023) explained that it started spontaneously and has been going on for more than 100 hours. Ninaber (2023) drove from North Carolina to join in the revival, saying, “With what’s going on in the world and all of the darkness, this was like light and light coming through…So I wanted to see what was going on and see God moving.”

Asbury University is not a stranger to revivals; however, the last one lasting this long was in February 1970. Asbury University was originally known as the Kentucky Holiness School. This school was considered “a real salvation school” and was the first holiness college in America. It was later renamed Asbury College in 1891 and then Asbury University in 2010.

The Kentucky Holiness School was renamed Asbury College to honor the work of Francis Asbury, who was born in 1745 and died in 1816. He was the 1st Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States. His first conference was in 1773 with 1,160 members. By 1783 there were 13,746 members and 82 ministers. By 1800 there were 64,894 members and 287 ministers. Francis Asbury was a circuit rider who preached over 16,000 sermons by traveling 270,000 miles with three horses. Francis Asbury was a zealous preacher sharing the Good News in America and his efforts contributed to the upcoming Second Great Awakening, which spanned from the 1820s through the 1850s.

During the Second Great Awakening in the United States, evangelists such as Francis Asbury (1745-1816) and Charles Finney (1792-1875) answered the call to speak the truth to thousands in the hopes of saving souls.

Speaking the truth requires us to know the truth. My latest book Jesus Come Revive America: Forgive Us for We Have Sinned, is now available for purchase. All of the American revivals are detailed in this book, along with information about how we can prepare for revival in the future. I encourage you to get a copy of the book today!

Kyle Idleman, Senior Pastor at Southeast Christian Church, attended the Asbury Revival this past week and said that “revival is marked by repentance and reconciliation.” Without knowing the truth, we cannot be convicted of our sins, fall to our knees, and look to heaven for salvation.

Lorimer explained that he traveled to Asbury University to join the revival that had been going on for days. He wrote, “What a beautiful experience – over 1500 people praising and worshiping God in a calm and sincere spirit. It wasn’t wild or crazy. It wasn’t hyped or forced. None of those people had to be there – they were there to seek God and be with His people.”

Holt wrote, “The contrast was striking. We saw dignified men in suits and ties and tattooed guys in ball caps and t-shirts. A huge percentage of the crowd was young adults, but there were young families with toddlers in tow and very elderly couples with white hair and slow steps.”
